Stamped Concrete vs. Pavers

Pavers vs stamped

When you’re looking for a more decorative hardscaping option than a basic broom-finished concrete, you are likely to come across two primary options: Stamped concrete and pavers. You may be confused about the differences between the two since they can look very much the same. However, one is a solid surface that has been stamped to look like individual stones, and the other are separate stones pieced together.

Both stamped concrete and pavers can create a beautiful look, and both have unique benefits. Take a closer look at how they compare to decide which is right for you:

Installation

Stamped concrete is installed the same way as any concrete. A base is prepared, the forms are put in place, and the concrete is poured. However, with stamped concrete, a final step is adding to the finishing process. A stamp is used to mark the wet concrete with a design that can look like all types of stones or pavers.

Installation of pavers can be a bit more complicated. The base needs to be packed with sand and gravel, then the pavers have to be laid out one-by-one. The more complex the pattern, the more complex installation will be. Then the pavers have to be packed in with sand. The process takes a long time, and many things can go wrong along the way.

Maintenance

Stamped concrete is also easier to maintain than pavers. Stamped concrete may have grooves in the surface that make it look like it is separate stone, but it is actually one solid surface. In contrast, pavers are separate units that have sand and dirt between them, which leaves openings for weeds and plants to grow. It can be frustrating having to constantly pull those weeds or spray for them.

Pavers also shift over time, which can contribute to ongoing maintenance. The only thing you’ll need to do for stamped concrete is keep it clean.

Style

For many people, the final choice for any decorative element comes down to style. Will it look the way you want it to? A big benefit of stamped concrete is that it can look like anything. You get the right stamp and the right coloring, and it can look like any kind of stone. That also means that you can replicate the look of luxury stone without the cost.

Pavers can also come in a wide variety of styles. More complex styles require more complex installation, such as cutting the stones into unique shapes. With stamped concrete, you can skip those steps and just mold the concrete the way you want it to look.

Stamped concrete is an excellent option for pathways, patios, pool decks, and much more. Triad Associates can create beautiful stamped concrete for any space around your home.
