A fish pond, waterfall, fountain or other water feature can be a beautiful and relaxing addition to your home, but now that fall is officially here they will need some extra care to make sure they stay beautiful for years to come.
As the leaves change color and fall from your home’s trees, they can easily land in your water feature and cause problems if you do not properly maintain your feature.
Leaves can clog your filters, hoses and pumps causing costly damages. They can also sink to the bottom and decay through the winter, releasing toxic gases to disrupt the health of your water garden or even stain the bottom of the feature.
Check your skimmers and filters regularly, sometimes more than once a day, to keep your water clear of debris.
As the temperature dips, additional care is needed. Most fish can’t metabolize food below 55 degrees, so when it gets to cold, any food they eat could potentially rot in their stomachs and cause health issues. If it gets cold enough for a hard freeze, your equipment could also be destroyed.
