The installation of pavers around your home will add beauty, functionality and value. They can be used in a variety of applications from walkways and garden paths to pool patios and entertainment spaces. While the proper installation of pavers is of paramount importance, some simple maintenance after the fact will also help keep your pavers level, secure and attractive for years to come.
Tips on Paver Maintenance
Once installed, pavers are essentially maintenance free. Still, here are four important tips to remember:
- Brushing “bedding” sand into the joints of your pavers an on annual bass will keep them tightly sealed. This process not only keeps the pavers properly aligned but also eliminates any infiltration by weeds.
- Depending on use and the weather, pavers should be resealed every 2-3 years. Test your pavers by pouring some water on the surface. If the water does not bead on the pavers, it is time to reseal them.
- Spills and stains are easily removed if the pavers are properly sealed. Even oil and grease stains can be removed with commercially available removal products. If you use the later, be sure to check and reseal the pavers, if necessary.
- Some pavers may develop a whitish haze known as efflorescence. This phenomenon is caused by a totally natural chemical reaction and poses no threat to your pavers. While not technically paver maintenance, there are “efflorescence” cleaners available that work quite well. However, over time, natural weathering will eventually solve the problem.
