Home walkways add a lot of interest to a landscape, they serve as a visual focal point and they add a sense of continuity to the space. We’ve got some ideas on how to build the right one for your home’s landscape.
First off, home walkways are most pleasing when they’re interesting, more than just a line from point A to point B. A curved walkway that dips behind shrubs and hedges makes the landscape more inviting, and mysterious. Equally important is picking the right style of walkway for your home; a traditional home pairs best with a formal walkway, crafted with brick, tile, or pavers. A more meandering walkway fits a cottage or bungalow, and a clean, modern gravel path or floating paver walkway is a good fit for a contemporary style home.
Another good tip for walkways? Bring some color in. Even concrete can be stained different colors, and tiles come in many different colors and patterns. Plants and flowers edging the walkway bring in rotating colors, and often pleasing scents too.
A good rule for laying out a walkway up to the front porch of your home is to use four feet as a guide for width; four feet allows two people to walk comfortably side by side. And when picking materials, remember the weather in your area; materials fare differently in hotter, colder, wetter, and drier climates.
