Pavers possess long-lasting usefulness, but it is important to remember that said usefulness is reliant on both care and consideration. Protecting a paver patio becomes that much more important in winter because winter weather is that much more punishing.
Here is how to protect a paver patio in winter:
- Using a sealer can provide the pavers with increased protection. Be sure to brush both the surface of the pavers and their exposed sides. Furthermore, be sure to re-brush them once the shine vanishes.
- If you are planning to sprinkle either salt or salt-based products on your pavers, please refrain from doing so. Salt contains moisture that can seep into the surface of the pavers and then refreeze in a process that can cause serious damage with sufficient repetition. Instead, either use something with no salt or sprinkle sand for increased traction.
- Use a plastic shovel instead of a metal shovel if you are clearing your patio. This is because metal can scratch both your pavers and the seal used to protect them. Alternatively, use a snow blower.
- Clean your patio when you get the chance to remove all traces of harmful substances.
