If your patio or outdoor area needs a little dressing up, consider hardscaping that provides beauty and aesthetic value throughout the seasons, works well in more confined areas, and has little mess or care. The following selections fit the bill and are tolerant of our Massachusetts climate.
-
Japanese Maple – This popular ornamental shade tree is green in summer and has a red-purplish spray of color in spring and fall. Growing 15-25 feet depending on variety, it can also be pruned to varying sizes as shrubs.
- Crape Myrtle – A fast-grower, this flowering tree grows 10-12 feet with beautiful pink or red flowers from midsummer until frost. During winter months, the bark sports a smooth brown and pink sheen. It likes more moderate temperatures near the coast, but heartier varieties should thrive well in a protected area near your patio.
- Redbud – This tree beckons the first breath of spring with April’s blossoming rosy pink buds and pale green foliage that changes from reddish-brown to dark green to yellow in the fall.
- Smoketree – This is a very showy tree throughout summer and fall, with smoky pink flowers and leaves that turn from blue-green to reddish-purple. It grows 10-15 feet, with a 12-foot spread.
