Huey Lewis once sang that it’s “hip to be square,” and as they say, sometimes the oldies are the goodies. When it comes to landscape trends, more and more designers are returning to square shapes and patterns in their designs because they are simple, refined, and provide clear definition on their client’s property. The following are some ways you can incorporate squares in the hippest ways possible.
Consider adding in a checkerboard design. This can be done with grass, flower beds, and even gravel or tile. This is a look that pairs very well with contemporary architecture, especially when you utilize larger square sizes.
You can also straighten your walkways and patio out and use a combination of square tiles inset with gravel or grass. This will create a well defined area that’s easy to maintain. Finally, you can enjoy the benefit of both squares and diamonds by shifting the direction of the tile/stone/grass so that it runs diagonally from the edge of fencing, patios, etc.
