Patios, paths, pool decks, retaining walls, driveways, and other hardscaping elements require a small amount of maintenance, but in order to have your garden looking fabulous come spring, you’ll also want to do some winter gardening tasks. Take a look at these tips to prepare your garden for winter from Better Homes & Gardens.
- Cut perennials back to soil level after the first frost, unless the plant has an exceptionally attractive shape, interesting seed pods, etc.
- Use fallen leaves and other dead plant debris to create your own compost and soil conditioner. Active compost will kill weeds and prevent disease. Make sure you wait until the ground is frozen, in order to prevent rodents from taking up residence.
- If there is diseased foliage on evergreens, cut it off and discard of it in the trash. Rake up and throw away old mulch as well, since both can harbor disease.
