Having a pond is a great way to increase the curb appeal of your property, not to mention your enjoyment of it. However, once winter comes around there are a number of things you’ll need to do to maintain your pond. The following are a few winter pond care tips you should follow:
- Feeding fish – Hopefully, you have been feeding your fish high protein food so that they have built up a reserve of fat to get them through winter. Once water temperatures drop below 60 degrees, feed them once a day. Use a wheat germ based food that can be digested easily.
- Don’t break the ice – If your pond freezes over, do not attempt to break the ice. This can cause shockwaves which could kill your fish. Use a floating pond de-icer instead. This will keep the water from freezing over as well.
- Equipment care – Turn off your pump after the water temperature drops into the 40s to reduce the circulation of your pond water. Turn the water flow down as well.
