Initially used by the Romans, columns remain a common element in landscape design. There are so many ways to integrate columns into your design that deciding how you want to use them can be intimidating.
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Place a line of identical columns along your driveway or walkway to create a more formal looking landscape. If you place lattice up the side of your columns, you can plant climbing flowers beneath them to add some color.
- Create permanent plant stands throughout your yard or in the corners of flowerbeds by installing several half-height columns.
- Use stone columns as the supports for your back deck or pool deck. You can also use matching columns to create the posts for your deck gate.
- Place two tall columns against a fence, and then place a large sheet of lattice between them. This creates the perfect climbing structure for vining flowers such as sweet peas or climbing roses.
