3 Seating Wall Tips to Consider
No matter what kind of patio or outdoor entertaining space you have, a seating wall can be a beautiful addition that will enhance the space and improve its overall functionality. If you already have a patio, you can give it an upgrade by adding a seating wall. If you are currently planning a new patio or entertaining space, consider adding seating walls to the design. The hardscaping experts at Triad Associates can help you plan your new space or upgrade an old one!
What is a Seating Wall?
A seating wall is a low wall that looks very much like a retaining wall. However, it is a free-standing wall, and it has multiple purposes by providing both a wall border for your outdoor space and serves as a place for people to sit. The top of the wall has a wide, flat “cap” that is large enough for people to relax on. Sometimes, the wall is split so that it stops where the seat is, and then a narrow part of the wall continues up, providing a back for the seat. Cushions can be added to enhance comfort.
Seating Wall Location
Typically, seating walls are located on the edge of a patio or other hardscaped space. In many cases, the wall runs around the entire edge, creating a natural border and providing plenty of seating space. However, some instead choose to opt to have a more simple, shorter seating wall on part of their patio. It is also not uncommon to have two or three shorter walls placed on different sides of a patio.
Where you choose to install your seating wall, and if you choose to have more than one seating wall, will have an impact on the finished design, so keep these considerations in mind with other elements such as the type of stone and the shape of the patio.
Wall Height
Typically, a sitting wall has a height of 18 inches to 21 inches. This standard height is comfortable for most people when they are bending to sit. If the wall is too high, children may not be able to sit on it and even adults may have to lift themselves up. If the wall is too low, adults may feel like they are squatting when they are sitting, and it may be hard for them to get back up when they are ready to stand.
City Zoning Restrictions
Every municipality has its own rules about how things can be built. The designers at Triad Associates will check local regulations before finalizing the design of your sitting wall or any other hardscaping elements. Our designers can also assist with the permitting process if necessary.
